Effects of self-paced interval and continuous training on health markers in women

B+moderate evidenceMeasured on non-athletesWritten before October 2026, being re-checked

Participants

n=45 inactive premenopausal women; randomized to HIIT (n=15), continuous training CT (n=15), or inactive control (n=15). 12 weeks, 3×/week. All training self-paced (no imposed power targets).

Protocol

HIIT: 5 × 5-min sets, each set repeating 30 s low-, 20 s moderate- and 10 s high-intensity cycling, 2 min rest between sets.
CT: 50 min of continuous cycling.
Both self-paced, 3 times weekly for 12 weeks.

Enjoyment was similar after HIIT and CT. HIIT delivered its adaptations for a lower time commitment.

Practical Application

n=45 inactive premenopausal women, 12 weeks of self-paced cycling 3×/week: VO2peak rose 16 ± 8% (HIIT) and 21 ± 12% (CT) and resting HR fell 5 ± 9 and 4 ± 7 bpm vs an inactive control, with no change in the control group — self-paced training with no imposed power targets produced large fitness gains in this population.
Type-specific effects: body mass (-0.7 ± 1.4 kg), submaximal walking HR (-3 ± 4 bpm) and verbal memory improved only with HIIT; systolic (-5 ± 6 mmHg) and mean arterial (-3 ± 5 mmHg) blood pressure and mental well-being improved only with CT.
Inference, not tested: this is evidence that self-paced training "works" in beginners, not evidence about ERG vs non-ERG in trained cyclists — no power-matched or imposed-intensity arm existed, and the participants were sedentary.
Inference, not tested: enjoyment was equal between HIIT and CT, so the shorter HIIT format is a reasonable default for time-poor beginners; whether self-pacing improves long-term adherence was not measured.

Limitations

Inactive women, not trained cyclists — transferability to trained population uncertain. No power-matched or imposed-intensity comparison group. Self-paced means variable dose — dose-response unclear. 15 per arm.

Tier line said Tier 2-3 (Trained/Well-trained) -> Tier 0: the abstract's participants are inactive premenopausal women.
Lead Practical bullet was an ERG claim ("athletes do not need ERG mode") -> now the study's finding with values and population; ERG relevance labelled as inference.
Added the abstract's protocol (5 × 5-min 30/20/10 sets; 50 min continuous) and the type-specific results the entry omitted (submaximal HR, verbal memory, blood pressure, well-being, unchanged lipids/glucose, equal enjoyment, lower HIIT time commitment).
