6RM elastic-band push-ups and 6RM bench press, matched for EMG activity, produced similar 1RM and 6RM bench-press gains in 5 weeks

When effort/activation is matched, loaded push-ups substitute for the barbell

Participants

n=30 university students with advanced resistance-training experience, randomised to 6RM bench press, 6RM elastic-band push-up, or control.
EMG measured first at 6RM for both exercises; training then used the same loads and variables for 5 weeks.

Protocol

Two-part randomized study: thirty university students with advanced resistance training experience; EMG levels first evaluated during 6RM bench press and push-up (from the abstract).
5-week training period with random division into 3 groups: 6RM bench press, 6RM elastic band push-up, or control; exercises performed with the same loads and variables used during EMG data collection.
Outcomes: 6RM and 1RM tests, percent change between pretest and posttest.

Key Findings

At baseline, EMG amplitude did not differ between the 6RM bench press and the 6RM band push-up.
Both training groups improved 1RM and 6RM bench press significantly with similar gains (changes ranging from 13.65 to 22.21%); the control group did not change.
Group differences in percent change: 6RM p = 0.017, 1RM p < 0.001 (training groups vs control).

Practical Application

In 30 resistance-trained university students, 5 weeks of 6RM elastic-band push-ups raised 1RM and 6RM bench press as much as 6RM bench pressing (gains 13.65-22.21%), when both were matched for muscle activity — banded push-ups can stand in for the bench when equipment is limited, provided the load is genuinely heavy.
Inference, not tested: progress the push-up load (heavier bands, weight vest, harder leverage) as it gets easy, to keep it near a 6RM.

Limitations

Short (5 wk) RCT, 30 participants across three groups; similar gains is not a formal equivalence test.
Only young trained students; heavier 1RM strength in advanced lifters beyond 5 weeks is not tested.

Population "untrained adults" (Tier 1-2) -> the abstract says university students with ADVANCED resistance-training experience; Tier set to 2 and the limitation rewritten.
Added n=30, three groups incl. control, the 6RM loading and the 13.65-22.21% gain range from the abstract.
