Practical Application

Will fasted rides or Zone 2 make me leaner? Not by themselves. They burn more fat during the ride, but body fat follows energy eaten and spent over days and weeks; fasted against fed exercise made a trivial difference to body mass.
What it means for training: for fat loss, set intake and training against the body-mass trend over weeks (SYNTH-54, SYNTH-87); choose fasted or easy sessions for their own reasons (SYNTH-51, SYNTH-69).
What it does not mean: that calories can be counted precisely (SYNTH-87), that every body answers a surplus alike (REF-1127, REF-1128), or that a deficit is harmless for a training athlete (SYNTH-54).

Mechanism

Fat gain needs a positive energy balance: the energy-balance model calls this a law of physics (Hall 2022), and the carbohydrate-insulin model accepts it, disputing only which way causation runs (Ludwig 2021, full text). Intake and expenditure are linked, and counter-regulation resists weight loss (Hall & Guo 2017).
Exercise raises muscle's capacity to oxidise fat, yet up to about an hour of moderate exercise changed 24-h fat oxidation little (Melanson 2009); in 5 studies of 96 adults fasted and fed aerobic exercise differed trivially for body mass (Hackett & Hagstrom 2017).
In overweight untrained men, 13 weeks of 600 kcal a day of exercise took off no more fat than 300 (−3.8 vs −4.0 kg), though both raised peak fat oxidation (REF-1332, B-). The same 1000-kcal surplus on each of 84 days added 4.3 to 13.3 kg of body mass in 24 young men (REF-1127, B).

Common misreading

"Zone 2 burns the fat off"; "fasted cardio burns more fat, so I lose more"; "eat less, move more is all there is" (intake and expenditure push back on each other, Hall & Guo 2017).

Backs

SYNTH-83 "not a unique fat-burning effect" · SYNTH-54 "Train-low is not a weight-loss method" · SYNTH-87 "If the trend disagrees with the log, change the intake by the trend"
