The higher oxygen consumption during multiple short intervals is sex-independent and not influenced by skeletal muscle characteristics in well-trained cyclists

B+moderate evidenceMeasured on highly trained athletesWritten before October 2026, being re-checked

Participants

n=19 well-trained cyclists: 11 women (VO2max 62.5 ± 6.4 mL/kg/min) and 8 men (VO2max 81.0 ± 5.2 mL/kg/min); m. vastus lateralis biopsy for fiber type proportion, capillarization and citrate synthase activity.

Protocol

Three 6 × 8 min interval protocols with identical mean power during the work intervals, equal to the cyclist's 40-min maximal effort (PO40min):

FormatWork phaseRestStructure
30/1530 s @ 118% PO40min15 s active recovery @ 60% PO40min6 × 8-min blocks of 30/15
CONConstant 100% PO40min—6 × 8 min continuous
60/6060 s @ 110% PO40min60 s @ 90% PO40min6 × 8-min blocks of 60/60

Recovery between the 8-min blocks is not described in the abstract.

Key Results

%VO2max and time ≥90% VO2max (primary outcomes):

FormatMean %VO2maxTime ≥90% VO2maxvs CONvs 60/60
30/1586.7 ± 10.1%1123 ± 787 sp ≤ 0.01 (higher, both)p ≤ 0.05 (higher, both)
CON85.0 ± 10.4%879 ± 779 s—no difference (p ≥ 0.36)
60/6085.6 ± 10.0%917 ± 745 sno difference (p ≥ 0.36)—

30/15 exceeds both formats for time ≥90% VO2max — ~28% more than CON at identical mean power.

Sex differences:

%VO2max and time ≥90% VO2max during the sessions: no differences between women and men

Muscle characteristics (biopsy):

Fiber type proportion, capillarization and citrate synthase activity were not related to %VO2max during the interval sessions

Mechanism

Inference, not tested: 30/15 intervals create high-frequency oscillation — every 30 s the load exceeds PO40min by 18%, and the 15-s recovery is too short for VO2 to fall much, so cumulative time near VO2max grows. The absence of any link to fiber type, capillarization or citrate synthase suggests the difference is not peripheral; the paper measured the association, not the mechanism.

Practical Application

In n=19 well-trained cyclists (11 women, VO2max 62.5; 8 men, VO2max 81.0), three 6 × 8-min sessions at the same mean power (PO40min) gave 1123 s ≥90% VO2max for 30/15 (30 s @ 118% / 15 s @ 60%) versus 879 s for continuous work (p ≤ 0.01) and 917 s for 60/60 (p ≤ 0.05), with no sex difference and no relation to muscle fiber type, capillarization or citrate synthase — at equal average power, 30/15 buys the most time near VO2max, for women and men alike.
Session structure as tested: 6 × 8 min of 30/15 (30 s @ 118% of 40-min power, 15 s @ 60%), i.e. each 8-min block is a continuous run of 30 s/15 s repeats (~10-11 per block), 48 min of interval work in total. Anchor the intensity to the athlete's 40-min maximal power.
Not from this paper; the base's own practice: can alternate with HIDIT (decreasing intervals, Vaccari 2020 REF-130) for stimulus variety.
Equally effective for women and men in this sample — prescribe by % of a personal power benchmark (PO40min / FTP), not absolute watts.
Muscle biopsy not needed: the result was independent of fiber type composition.

Limitations

Acute study — no data on chronic adaptations with regular 30/15 use. Large between-subject SDs (e.g. 1123 ± 787 s) — the format effect is consistent, the absolute time is not. Menstrual cycle in women not controlled. Single target power (100% PO40min) — other intensities not tested. Small sex sub-groups (11 and 8).

n missing -> n=19 (11 women, VO2max 62.5; 8 men, VO2max 81.0).
Practical "10-15 reps of 30/15, 2-3 sets, 5 min rest" -> not what was tested; replaced with the study's 6 × 8-min block structure. Mean %VO2max values (86.7 / 85.0 / 85.6%) added; Tier set to 3.
Second pass 2026-09-27 (number-by-number check against the abstract): "32 reps of 30/15 per 8-min block" was arithmetically wrong (8 min ÷ 45 s ≈ 10.7) -> ~10-11 per block.
Cross-references to duplicate stubs repointed to their canonical entries (REF-085->REF-303); the stubs were emptied on 2026-09-27.
Cross-reference descriptions checked against the cited entries' current content; wrong years, wrong entries and claims the cited entry does not make were corrected.
Resync 2026-09-28: HIDIT attributed to 'Rønnestad 2020 REF-045' as 5×5 min -> Vaccari 2020 REF-130, labelled house practice.
